How Does Laser Welding Develop And Work?

Sep. 01, 2021

Laser welding is a metal joining process. As with all welding and joining processes, laser welding generates heat at a specific point. Laser beam welding has been in use for about 30 years. Until now, it has been used selectively and has been in fierce competition with traditional welding methods. Due to modern additive manufacturing methods, laser welding is now rapidly becoming more and more important. Laser welding machine manufacturer shows you its developing history.

How does laser welding work?

Laser beam welding is basically very simple: two precisely cut plates are held together. The laser melts the edges of the sheet metal. The melt flows into each other - the joint is completed.

The aluminum plates are welded continuously. In the case of sheet metal, especially thicker cross-sections, seam welding is preceded by spot welding. Staples stabilize the sheet metal parts and ensure constant precision during the joining process.

The history of laser welding

Laser measurement

The spiritual father of the laser was none other than Albert Einstein. About 100 years ago, he published the first ideas on the subject of light bundling. It was not until 1928 that the first experiments proved Einstein's theory. However, another 32 years passed since then until the first laser beams could actually be produced with rubies in 1960. Soon after, the expensive ruby was replaced by a gas, which made the production of laser devices much cheaper.

This new and fascinating form of light brought about great advances in measurement technology at first, enabling precise measurements over long distances for the first time. The first attempts at laser beam welding were also made in the 1960s. However, it was the laser cutting process that was initially most appreciated.

Sprouting

Laser cutting is the most precise method for cutting materials. Due to its enormous energy density, the laser cutting process is very fast. Despite the enormous advantages in terms of accuracy, speed and material protection, laser cutting and laser welding were used by only a small part of the industry for a long time. It was not until the mid-1980s that laser cutting and laser beam welding systems became significantly more popular. It has many obvious advantages.

Aircraft manufacturers were able to make great strides with this innovative separation and joining process. The materials used as standard in avionics also play a decisive role in this regard: With a melting temperature of only 600 °C, the aluminum base is much easier to work with than the steel traditionally used in mechanical engineering.

Nowadays

Today, laser welding is still not the standard welding process. However, it has long since left its experimental state behind. Contract service providers and sheet metal fabricators increasingly rely on this high-tech process, which continues to impress with its efficiency, quality and precision.

The additive manufacturing process, which began to gain popularity nearly a decade ago, is now reaching its peak with laser welding. For a long time, 3D printing was only available for ceramics and plastics. But now laser welding of metal powders can now be used to create any shape with 3D printing. This discovery is now providing another boost to laser welding.

Perfection

The Profile Welding System (PWS) is a complete and state-of-the-art laser welding system for tubes and profiles, equipped with integrated process sensors for seam detection and tracking. PWS can be used in combination with a variety of laser beam sources, such as the DC series of diffusion-cooled CO2 slat lasers or the High-Light-FL series of fiber lasers.
