The working principle of laser welding technology is based on the principle of heat generation by a laser source. The laser sources used in this method also vary, with different laser sources being suitable for different types of material and their physical and chemical properties. However, depending on the type, thickness and quality of the material to be welded, there are various laser welding methods.
Let us begin to define laser welding machines by different categories.
Fibre laser machines
The fibre laser welding machine is ideally suited to processing metal parts. In addition, it offers great reliability and efficiency. It has been measured that laser welders with fibre lasers are close to 25% accurate.
Pulsed laser machines
The pulsed laser mechanism is very suitable for metals that are light in nature and thin in thickness. The pulsed laser therefore exposes the metal body intermittently. It prevents it from burning or melting.
In addition, this type of laser welding is ideal for welding metal sheets, razors, jewellery and even medical prostheses such as screws.
Continuous laser machines
Continuous lasers are ideal for welding parts that are thick and strong. In addition, this welding technique is also suitable for metals with difficult to fuse surfaces. This type of welding is more expensive than pulsed welding, but can save you a lot of money and labour in the long run.
CO2 laser machines
The CO2 laser welder provides an excellent continuous welding beam for efficient and durable welding. It can easily penetrate both metallic and non-metallic objects.
Here are some of these laser welding technologies.
Direct heating
The direct heating method uses heat transfer from a heat source. This subsequently causes the base material to melt and eventually weld with other materials.
Energy transfer
In contrast, the energy transfer method is slightly different in that it uses an intermediate material to transfer the heat from the source to the weld seam. Usually, an absorbent ink acts as the intermediate material for energy transfer. Similarly, butt joints can be achieved by directing the heat at the angle of the joint.
Laser welding
Another method of using laser welding is the use of the lock-hole method. This method focuses the laser beam onto the material and produces a deep penetration of heat. The resulting welds have a large depth to width ratio and form durable tight welds.
